CNE POLITICAL ADVISERS FORUM

A Journey through the History of
the Spanish Liberal Movement
What lessons can be learned?

The Issue

Dr. Gabriel Calzada will discuss the libertarian movement in Spain, which is extraordinarily large and continues to grow rapidly. He will begin his talk with some history concerning the Salamanca School of Natural Law theorists, with reference to Francisco de Vitoria, Francisco de Suarez, and Juan de Mariana. Knowledge of the enormous Spanish anarchist movement that flourished a century ago is crucial to any understanding of the current Spanish libertarian movement. Many libertarians are converts from leftism, and Spain has a large population of people raised in a leftist manner who are looking today for different answers.

Gabriel will focus on the achievements of two individuals: Jesus Huerta de Soto, and Federico Jimenez Losantos. Huerta is the key scholar, and Jimenez is a key media performer, and both are men of "contagious enthusiasm." He will also focus on the importance of the Internet. He will explain what can be learned from the Spanish experience.
