"Whom Do You Trust?"
A discussion with Liz Kendall

The Centre for the New Europe is pleased to invite you to the first lunchtime seminar of the autumn programme, under the theme “Whom Do You Trust?”. Liz Kendall of the Institute for Public Policy Research will give a talk on “The Twentyfirst Century Patient”, which examines the changing nature of medicine, patient expectations and responsibilities, and their implications for the future structure of health care systems. Drawing on one of the largest research programmes undertaken in the field, Ms Kendall will analyse the various trends in healthcare provision, economics, politics and society that are influencing the care available to patients, and their own responses to those factors. The talk will be of critical interest to anyone involved, or interested in, politics, healthcare and the development of society in coming decades.

Moderated by Stephen Pollard, CNE senior fellow

Liz Kendall is the Associate Director of the Institute for Public Policy Research, the British think tank most closely allied to the Blair government, where she runs the Health and Social Care programme. She was previously a Special Adviser to the Blair Government between 1997 and 1998. In 1996, Ms. Kendall went to work as a Political Adviser to Harriet Harman MP when Ms Harman was Shadow Health Secretary and then Shadow Social Security Secretary. Previously, she was a Senior Research Fellow in Public Health at the King’s Fund, a healthcare think tank in London. Drawing on the experiences in other major cities across Europe and North America, she ran a major project assessing the potential of the new Mayor of London to improve health care services.

Ms. Kendall speaks and writes widely about policy issues in the print and broadcast media. She is the author of The Future Patient (IPPR, 2001), which analyses patients’ changing wants, needs and expectations and the implications for policy makers and practitioners, and The New Gender Agenda (2000).
