At the next free-beer, free-trade event--known formally as the CNE
EU Parliamentary Assistants Forum--Dutch political philosopher Luuk
Van Middelaar will make the case against the anti-globalisation
movement, including its neo-Marxist ideology and its internal contradictions.
Middelaar, a CNE visiting fellow, is also a member of Commisioner Bolkestein's
cabinet.
CNE senior fellow Richard Miniter will moderate the event, which
will be held on 27 May 2003, at Fatboy's Sports bar, from 19:30 to 21:30.

After
studying history and philosophy at the University of Groningen and at
the Sorbonne in Paris, Luuk Van Middelaar earned Masters Degrees in
both subjects. Since 2000, he has been a researcher attached to the
Raymond Aron Centre in Paris, where he is completing his Ph.D. thesis
in Political Science. In 1999 Luuk Van Middelaar published his book
“Politicide: the Murder on Politics in French Philosophy,” originally
in Dutch. The book became a widely acclaimed critique of French post-war
philosophy and its blindness to the failures of communism and to the
merits of liberal democracy. In June 2001, he was elected Burgen Scholar
by the Academia Europaea. He is a regular contributor to the Dutch daily
newspapers, de Volkskrant and Trouw, on subjects such as politics, globalisation,
and political philosophy.
