"The Anti-Globalisation Movement"
CNE PARLIAMENTARY ASSISTANTS FORUM




At the next free-beer, free-trade event--known formally as the CNE EU Parliamentary Assistants Forum--Dutch political philosopher Luuk Van Middelaar will make the case against the anti-globalisation movement, including its neo-Marxist ideology and its internal contradictions. Middelaar, a CNE visiting fellow, is also a member of Commisioner Bolkestein's cabinet.

CNE senior fellow Richard Miniter will moderate the event, which will be held on 27 May 2003, at Fatboy's Sports bar, from 19:30 to 21:30.

photo of Luuk Van MiddelaarAfter studying history and philosophy at the University of Groningen and at the Sorbonne in Paris, Luuk Van Middelaar earned Masters Degrees in both subjects. Since 2000, he has been a researcher attached to the Raymond Aron Centre in Paris, where he is completing his Ph.D. thesis in Political Science. In 1999 Luuk Van Middelaar published his book “Politicide: the Murder on Politics in French Philosophy,” originally in Dutch. The book became a widely acclaimed critique of French post-war philosophy and its blindness to the failures of communism and to the merits of liberal democracy. In June 2001, he was elected Burgen Scholar by the Academia Europaea. He is a regular contributor to the Dutch daily newspapers, de Volkskrant and Trouw, on subjects such as politics, globalisation, and political philosophy.
