"The Invisible Hand of Adam Smith vs.
The Visible Hand of Keynes:
Which Way Europe?"

A discussion with Mark Skousen

Drawing from his book, The Making of Modern Economics, Dr. Skousen will discuss the economic theories of Adam Smith versus John Maynard Keynes in reviewing the direction of economic policy in Europe.

In his new book, Dr. Skousen details the long-running global struggle between the detractors of Adam Smith's classical model of democratic capitalism (including Karl Marx, Thorstein Veblen, John Maynard Keynes and David Ricardo) and the defenders (such as Alfred Marshall, Carl Menger, Irving Fisher, Ludwig von Mises and Milton Friedman) who fought for Adam Smith's celebrated "system of natural liberty."

This struggle is presented as an adventure of high drama full of fascinating details about the great economists' lives, with anecdotes such as:

  • Gross Domestic Product (GDP)--how a Keynesian statistic was invented by a Russian.
  • Why Adam Smith burned his clothes . . . and then burned his papers.
  • The strange case of David Ricardo: Why Schumpeter, Keynes and Samuelson admired him--and deplored him.
  • Veblen's incredible prophecies about World War I and II.
  • The bizarre story of Jeremy Bentham: from democratic reformist to utilitarian fascist.

Dr. Mark Skousen has taught economics and finance at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, since 1986, having received his Ph.D. in economics at George Washington University in 1977.

He is the editor of Forecasts & Strategies, one of the largest investment newsletters in the United States. Dr. Skousen has written twenty books on economics and finance. The Making of Modern Economics is his most recent book.
